MSY Airport

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY)

About MSY Airport
Operating as the primary commercial airport for both southeast Louisiana and the New Orleans area, Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport serves over seven million passengers each year. For international airports, it is the second lowest-lying in the world, sitting only four and a half feet above sea level. After Hurricane Katrina, all airline carriers returned service out of New Orleans International except American West Airlines. The airport is currently offering incentives to airlines in hopes to promote increased service and return to pre-Katrina flight figures.

Location
New Orleans International Airport makes traveling to the Big Easy an easy feat. Located only 11 miles from the downtown area, River Walk, Jackson Square and the French Quarter

History
Plans for a new airport in the New Orleans area began in 1940 after the Shushan Airport could no longer keep up with expansions and increased passenger travel. The new airport, Moisant Field, began commercial service in 1946 after World War II, and received a new terminal complex in 1959.

Studies were done to view the feasibility of relocating the airport to another site; however, instead of relocating, the plans changed to renovating and expanding Moisant Field. The main terminal ticketing area was lengthened, access became easier from the roadway, and Concourses A and B were constructed.

Moisant Field was renamed in 2001 to honor Louis Armstrong, the famous jazz musician from the Big Easy.

Services
Since 1998, the only new-city addition to New Orleans International has been non-stop service to Milwaukee starting in 2010. Once a major gateway to Latin America, this travel now goes through other cities rather than through New Orleans. Travelers will still find a variety of destinations from New Orleans including Toronto, Atlanta, Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago and Milwaukee.
