Location
Bush Intercontinental is north of Houston, 23 miles from the downtown area. The Sam Houston Tollway provides access for arriving and departing passengers

History
IAH joined the city’s airport system in 1969 after an alternative was needed aside from Hobby Airport. A new international airport would play a vital responsibility in the future economy of Houston, and so Houston Intercontinental Airport became the city’s major airport.

At the time of opening, only two terminals were in service, but expansion was inevitable. New facilities were built to accommodate the growing air traffic, in addition to international services. Former President George Bush was a native to Houston and was there when the airport first opened its doors in 1969. The airport was renamed in his honor in 1997.
