Dayton International is the third largest and third busiest airport in Ohio; seeing almost 3 million passengers per year makes it one of the nation’s fastest growing airports. The public airport is owned operated by the city of Dayton, Ohio. The Vectren Dayton Air Show is an annual event that takes place on the airport’s grounds and is considered one of the country’s premier aviation events; it brings in an estimated $5 million to the local economy. Serving primarily the residents of Southwest Ohio, Dayton prides itself on being “easy to and through”. Almost 55% of the country’s population is only a 90-minute flight from Dayton International, making the airport central in serving passengers as well as freight.

Location
Dayton International is nine miles north of downtown Dayton, easily accessible from Airport Access Road, off of I-70. The airport’s layout provides a smooth transition from air to vehicle with ground transportation only a few steps from the Terminal Building. Short term, long term and valet parking are all available options for travelers

History
The history of Dayton International is full of a rich and vibrant aviation history, starting with the Wright Brothers. A working, private airport began at the original site and was called Dayton Airport in 1928. A dedication ceremony happened 1936 and renamed the airfield as Dayton Municipal Airport. World War II brought significant changes to the airport, and it was the largest airport in Ohio by 1947.

A brand new $5.5 million terminal was open in 1959, and received a U.S. Customs facility in 1975; the name was changed to James M. Cox Dayton International Airport to reflect the status. Growth continued for the following decades, with a surge in domestic travel. Today, Dayton International has recently welcomed a new control tower, multi-level parking garage and improved runways.

Dayton’s main terminal hosts an ‘Arts in the Airport’ program which enhances the passengers’ experience while at the airport. Travelers can see Dayton’s rich aviation history, technology and innovation while promoting the greater Dayton artistic community.
While travelers are waiting for their flights they can dine in any of the airport’s several eateries or shop in their numerous news and gift shops within the Terminal Building. These services include Starbucks, Quiznos, Sbarro and newsstands.
