About BWI Airport
Serving the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, commonly known as BWI Airport, has 40 airlines serving over 20 million passengers each year. It is the 24th busiest airport in North America and was recently ranked as the best airport for its size.

Location
BWI is ten miles south of Baltimore, located in the unincorporated area of Anne Arundel County. It is also very close to Washington D.C., only a 30-minute drive northeast of the Capitol. Getting to and from BWI Airport is quite convenient; taxi, vans, shuttles, bus, car rental and rail are all options to getting to and from your destination. The airport provides an extensive assortment of parking no matter if you are there for an hour or for a week.

History
At the end of World War II, plans began to build a new airport to serve the Washington/Baltimore area. Ground broke in 1947, and Friendship International Airport opened its doors in 1950. Two year later, the airport was purchased by the Maryland Department of Transportation to upgrade, modernize and improve the airport. It became known as Baltimore/Washington International Airport and its IATA code changed from BAL to BWI in hopes to attract more passengers from the Washington-area.

The BWI Rail System began operation in 1980, making the airport the first in the US to be served by an intercity rail system; convenient access from the airport to the D.C area became a reality. Expansions and renovations would continue through the next few decades to handle the increase of passengers and air traffic.
