Atlanta International Airport is the largest employer in the state of Georgia, and can also boast as having the tallest airport control tower in the United States, standing over 398 feet.

Location
ATL is conveniently located a short distance from downtown Atlanta, approximately 7 miles from its central business district. Being the busiest passenger airport, it is no surprise that there are over 30,000 public parking spaces available in addition to the 13 rental car agencies in the Rental Car Center. Transportation to neighboring areas is hassle-free with the shuttle buses and train service (MARTA) available directly to and from the airport.

History
What was once an abandoned auto racetrack was soon transformed into the first phase of Hartsfield-Jackson in 1925. Originally named Candler Field, the first flight into the small airport took place one year later. By 1930, it was ranked the third busiest airport behind New York City and Chicago. The airport eventually doubled in size with the onset of World War II and in 1946 changed its name to Atlanta Municipal Airport. Eventually, it became the busiest airport in the world, and expansion was inevitable. A $21 million renovation opened a new terminal in 1961 and was accommodating over six million travelers each year. 1977 came and yet another expansion was needed. This time, it ended up being the largest construction project in the South, with a price tag over $500 million.

Complete in 1980, the name was changed once more to Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport. That was not the last construction, or name change, the airport would face. A fifth runway began in 2001 with completion in 2006 and makes ATL one of the few airports that can perform triple-simultaneous landings. A name change came once more, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was voted as its new title, in honor Atlanta’s former mayor, Maynard Jackson.
